Description

Imagine total peace and quiet. Just the trill of bird song, the hush of the breeze and burble of your hot tub. Yours to relax in by day and by night. Welcome to the absolute cabin retreat.

Cabin retreat

They say it’s difficult to get away from all. A challenge to find a place where peace and quiet reign supreme. Even harder to bag a holiday with luxury touches at every turn. And as for reducing your carbon footprint at the same time… But take a look at Mount Hooley Lodge and you’ll see all those boxes ticked and then some.

Take the location. The cabin sits high up on the moors near Alston, with the South Tyne Valley stretching as far as the eye can see and in all directions. Imagine this from every window. Take a moment to picture the night sky – the Milky Way twinkles like nowhere else in the country here.

And where better to soak up this glorious silence and natural backdrop than in your hot tub on the terrace, and that’s at any time of day or night too. Bask in the sunshine or soak under the constellations. Enjoy too your views from the deep, deep leather sofas and armchairs in the living room - the vistas take centre stage. That’s truly something to look at.

This holiday home is no ordinary wooden cabin; Mount Hooley Lodge takes on a whole new dimension here. The giant logs themselves sit perfectly to create spacious and cosy accommodation for all of you. The open-plan living space includes a dining area under the beams that flows into the uber-modern kitchen, sleek in white, grey and steel. Sheepskin, antlers and wood stoves provide just the right rustic touches.

And then it’s eco-friendly. All your heat (water and underfloor heating throughout) comes from a ground source. Perfect insulation from top to bottom – including that extraordinary grass roof – offers supreme comfort and puts a big tick next to the sustainable box.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

Four bedrooms (2 doubles and 2 kings that are convertible to twins) are spacious and offer relaxing and cosy accommodation. All enjoy moorland views and log features. There are two bathrooms (1 with shower).

Reviews

Absolutely beautiful cottage, very clean & really comfortable beds. The hosts have thought of everything you might possibly need for your stay including warm thick robes for wearing daily or after the hot tub. Beautiful and peaceful, bbq hut is amazing and star gazing is a must!

Ms M,

A fantastic lodge for our pre-Christmas family get together, surrounded by some gorgeous scenery. The combination of snow, sunshine and dark night skies (for star gazing from the hot tub) are hard to beat, this was our second visit and we rarely return anywhere.

Mr M,

The cottage is so lovely and the views are spectacular. The cottage has everything you need and Chris and Marion are so friendly. This is the second visit to Mount Hooley Lodge and it did not disappoint .

Mrs C,

We had a wonderful week with family in Mount Hooley Lodge. The views from the lodge are beautiful and the location very peaceful and private. The lodge is spacious and comfortable with plenty of seating. It's also very cosy. We had a BBQ and toasted marshmallows at the firepit and enjoyed the hot tub in all weather, including Storm Ashley. There's a lovely walk along the side of the railway track running from Alston and passing below the lodge. We'd highly recommend Mount Hooley.

Mrs P,

The lodge is amazing. There was plenty of room for 6 of us. The views are stunning and the bbq hut and hot tub are a really good feature. It was well equipped and had everything we needed in the kitchen. Lovely and warm and the water for showers was always nice and hot. There were plenty of pubs and walks nearby. The only issue we could see was the walk back up to the lodge from the road is very steep and we found it hard work, so I can imagine it would prove extremely difficult for someone with mobility issues or who wasn't quite as fit. Plenty of space for the dogs to run around. Overall it is a beautiful place to come for a relaxing break, it really is a gem of a lodge. We will definitely want to visit again.

Mrs C,

Fabulous lodge, wonderful views and well equipped with comfortable beds. Ground source heating was lovely with underfloor heating. Didn’t need fire in October. Went to Michelin star restaurant (Kirk style inn in Slaggyford). Great taxi service from local guy. Train ride on the steam train was fun. Visited Hexam for some shopping but mainly lots of good food and hot tub action. Dogs were welcome. It is sheep country but there was a lovely walk by the river which is well fenced for off lead. Chris and Marion were friendly hosts but unobtrusive. The local spar is quite big and their butchery is very good. BBQ hut was fun. We also used outdoor fire in the evening as the weather was on our side too. All in all a wonderful place.

Miss R,

Mount Hooley Lodge is an amazing holiday option. I cannot think that anyone could be disappointed. It’s simply FABULOUS! Very caring owners offering any help that could be needed without being obtrusive.

Mr D,

Fantastic cabin just as it looks on images. Could look at the view for hours. The outdoor area is perfect with space for eating, relaxing and of course the jacuzzi and barbecue hut. Inside the living area is ideal for a family holiday with plenty of comfy seats and a well equipped kitchen. Off this area the bedrooms are large with comfortable beds and there are two bathrooms with powerful showers, with plenty of hot water available after long walks. Alton itself has petrol station, Spar and Co Op, plus nice pubs and a few little shops. We went on the South Tynedale railway and walked to the nearby Roman fort. Also had good local walks to Long Meg and her daughters, and to Ashgill Force, plus visits to Hadrians wall (two of our party walked the entire path), Hexham, Corbridge and Penrith. The weather forecast for the local area is misleading. It often was forecast for worse weather than actually came. The predictions were rain all week but then improving as we got to each day. In fact it was warm and dry most of the time. The owners were very friendly and helpful, popping over just as we arrived from their nearby farmhouse. Thank you so much for building this fantastic piece of paradise and allowing us to share it.

Mrs H,

A single-storey house in a delightful setting, MHL was comfortable and clean and well-equipped for our holiday needs. Bountiful hot water in the property and despite a 'chilly' July week the underfloor heating made it super-comfortable for sitting around in our PJs of an evening. We always enjoy a hot-tub and it worked perfectly during our stay. What a view! The journeys to Keswick, Penrith and Grizedale to the west and to Durham and Gateshead to the east were each around an hour (or less). Not fast but straightforward and lovely scenery. We had a great (and warm and sunny!) day out traversing up and down the valley to see Aira Force (two waterfalls and lots of fast-moving water between...well worth a visit, though we found the best location to park was the car park opposite to the Aira High Force fall. A thoroughly relaxing and lazy week of sitting around and pottering in the general near-area.

Mr T,

Lovely quiet and peaceful place to stay and relax, even when weather is not the best. Everything provided to ensure a luxury, comfortable stay. It is easy to find, in an amazing location. Nothing matches the view from the balcony (hot tub) . Truly mesmerising. It is worth noting, there is only a small enclosed garden space for dogs to use, but there are some lovely walks to take them on around Alston

Miss A,

Hooley Lodge is a magnificent property in terms of amenities and location. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely return.

Mrs G,

Stunning location and amazing views, the cottage had everything we needed with great social spaces, perfect to a getaway with friends.

Miss W,

Amazing accommodation in a fabulous location. Everything you could possibly want or need for a wonderful stay.

Mrs C,

We had an amazing time at Mount Hooley Lodge, with family to celebrate my 60th Birthday. The Log cabin is fabulous, their is so much kitchen equipment, more than you could ever need for a weeks stay, really brilliant. The log burner and underfloor heating make it so cosy. The hot tub was fab and so was the Kota BBQ Hut. The views are wonderful. We all loved our stay. Its in a great location for walks too. Great Hospitality. Thank you so much. We will be back.

Mrs W,

Stunning location; very well equipped and comfortable cottage. We all enjoyed walk into the village and surrounding area.

Mrs D,

Excellent & luxurious lodge, amazing views, equipped to a very high standard, we used the BBQ hut and everyone enjoyed the hot tub. The owners are just lovely and make you feel so welcome on their farm. Great local walks, a 10-15 min walk into Alston. I can't recommend this lodge enough you will not be disappointed!

Mr O,

Excellent accommodation. Every aspect is of the highest standard. You could not find better host.

Mr S,

From the photos I knew this was going to be an amazing lodge but, WOW, the views are absolutely breathtaking! The lodge is 5* star luxury and more than adequately equipped. The hot tub was lovely on a cold night then hopping back into the lodge with the log burner making it all cosy! You can see the thought and detail that has gone into making this lodge into the perfect retreat and the owners should be proud of what they have achieved! Perfect hosts, always on hand if needed but never intrusive and gave us clear instructions on every aspect! Excellent place to just kick back and de-stress and fabulous for our fur babies with lots to explore nearby. Thank you for hosting us and I’m sure we’ll be back!

Mrs G,

What a beautiful place to stay. The location is absolutely stunning. We always travel with our own kitchen equipment, especially if we travel at Christmas. That was an utter waste of time as the kitchen is so well stocked. This has been the ownly holiday home we've visited, which was warm on arrival, due to the environmental friendly heating :) Thank you very much to the lovely owners for sharing this fabulous cabin, which was a real home away from home :)

Mrs L,

A fabulous property in a stunning location. We loved exploring Alston, the local footpaths and running routes and venturing further afield in the North Pennines. A very well equipped property, fully enclosed front and rear, made for an excellent holiday home.

Mr M,

Stunning property with amazing views, hot tub and lovely hosts. We had a fabulous week.

Mrs T,

This is our third time at mount hooley and again it didn’t disappoint. Firstly the lodge itself, just a beautiful home. Exceptionally well equipped, and the little bbq hut is a lovely addition since our last visit. Plenty towels and robes also provided. Then there’s the views!!! Amazing, day and evening. Although twilight is a good time for owl and bat spotting. We even got to see the Aurora one night. Thanks for a lovely stay. I’m sure we’ll return, and soon hopefully.

Mrs S,

The lodge is gorgeous, the views captivating in all weather. The deck is huge and our dogs were very secure in both the front and back of the property. This is on an active farm so sheep very close by. The owners are available if needed, but are not intrusive. Beds were very comfortable (and we are fussy), plenty of hot water for showers. Kitchen well equipped to cook at home but only a 10-15 minute walk into Alston village. We would definitively like to stay here again, the location is great to explore our beautiful English countryside.
